CapitaLand Obtains Provisional Permission to Redevelop JCube Mall into JCube Residence Condo and Commercial Space

CapitaLand has obtained provisional permission to redevelop JCube Mall into an integrated residential and commercial development. The development will feature a residential condominium and commercial space, and is expected to be completed in 2027.

The news of the redevelopment was announced on Tuesday (Feb 7) by CapitaLand Development (Singapore) (CLD). The developer said that the mall will close for good on August 6, 2023, making way for the new development. The sales launch for the new development is expected to be in the second half of 2023.

The development will include a residential condominium as well as commercial space on the first and second levels. CLD said it is working closely with the existing tenants of JCube to ensure a smooth handover of the premises and provide them with the necessary support.

The news of the closure of JCube has been met with disappointment from retail staff and shoppers. Some of JCube Condo the staff at the mall’s outlets were caught off guard by the news, which they learned from social media or from their colleagues. One employee at an adjacent store told another about the news, while another was forwarded a link to a news article by her husband.

CLD said that notices were sent by registered mail and email to the authorised representatives of JCube tenants before the news release was issued. It also said that its centre management team is in the midst of reaching out to individual tenants to provide them with the necessary support to ensure a smooth handover of the premises.

The proposed redevelopment of JCube was first hinted at in July 2022 when the Urban Redevelopment Authority published a proposed amendment to the masterplan on rezoning the site from commercial to residential with commercial.

Some of the mall’s tenants have expressed sadness at the news, as they have worked and lived in Jurong East for many years. Others are indifferent to the closure, as their companies have multiple outlets in Singapore.

CapitaLand said that it hopes tenants will find the six-month advance notice useful in their business planning. It also welcomed tenants who require assistance to approach them directly for discussions.
